CDR Phillip A. (Andy) Gist, USN

Military Faculty

Commander Gist is a member of the military faculty in the Joint and Combined Warfighting School at theJoint Forces Staff College, a part of the National Defense University, in Norfolk, Virginia. Commander Gist has over 20 years of Navy operational fleet experience and over 10 years of experience in joint, multinational, coalition, and interagency matters. He is a Naval Surface Warfare Supply Corps Officer and a Joint Qualified Officer. He currently teaches national security professionals in one of only two senior seminars at the Joint and Combined Warfighting School in the areas of joint, interagency, intergovernmental, and multinational operations as part of Joint Professional Military Education PhaseII. His prior teaching experience includes instructing for entry and mid-grade junior officers at the Navy Supply Corps School, Athens, GA from 2001 to 2003 and as a facilitator for Flag and General Officer Senior Leader Education at the Joint Staff J7 from 2011 to 2013 to include CAPSTONE, KEYSTONE, and PINNACLE seminars.
Commander Gist served aboard USS Portland (LSD 37) and USS Nashville (LPD 13) where he completed four operational deployments and supported Operations JOINT ENDEAVOR and ASSURED RESPONSE. His joint experience includes J4 Logistics at USNORTHCOM, Joint Task Force-Civil Support (JTF-CS), Fort Monroe, VA from 2004 to 2007 and J3/4 Logistics Concept Development at U.S. Joint Forces Command from 2010 to 2011. While at JTF-CS, he augmented the 1st Army staff as a part of JTF-Katrina in the J35 Future Plans cell and was a member of the initial NORTHCOM Pandemic Influenza Planning Group. He also served as the Plans and Operations Officer at the Naval Operational Logistics Support Center (NOLSC), Norfolk, VA from 2007 to 2010 where he augmented the Navy’s 4th Fleet staff as the logistics planner in the N5 as part of JTF-Haiti in support of Operation UNIFIED RESPONSE. His most recent assignment was as a joint Observer/Trainer on the Joint Staff J7 where he was part of a Deployable Training Team that supported the UNIFIED ENDEAVOR program for NATO International Security Assistance Forces, the Chairman’s Exercise Program, as well as numerous Combatant Command, Joint Task Force, and Service Component Command Mission Rehearsal Exercises worldwide.
Commander Gist is a graduate of The University of Florida where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1994. He earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of Georgia in 2004 and is a graduate of the Naval War College, College of Naval Command and Staff as well as the Joint Forces Staff College, Joint and Combined Warfighting School. He recently earned his Certificate in College Teaching from the Virginia Tidewater Consortium for Higher Education.
