General Information
Registration is conducted at the individual
schools. Specific information regarding transportation, school
lunches, and other matters of concern may be obtained at the
individual schools.
Age Requirements. A child must be five years
old on or before 30 September to enter kindergarten. Parents of
children who are five after 30 September and before 31 December may
petition the school division superintendent to enroll their child.
A child must be six years old on or before 31 December to enter the
first grade. NOTE: A birth certificate is required for each pupil
seeking enrollment in a Norfolk public school for the first time.
Physical Examinations. Kindergarten through
seventh grade students must furnish a Virginia physical examination
report, unless they are transferring from another Virginia school
system where they have completed this requirement. Copies of the
required Virginia State Physical Examination Form will be sent to
you by the School Liaison Officer or by the school. These forms are
honored if the physicals are conducted at a military facility. It
is highly recommended that physical examinations be completed
before arrival in Norfolk, if possible. Your children will not be
allowed to enter school until the physical examination is
completed.
Inoculations. Proof of the following
inoculations must be furnished: rubeola (measles), rubella (German
measles), mumps, DPT primary series, polio primary series, and a
tuberculosis test within the last year.
School Buses. Free transportation to all
public schools is furnished for children from JFSC. No bus ride
takes more than 20 minutes. Schedules may be obtained from the
individual schools.
Special Education
Parents of a child with special educational needs or adjustment
problems are encouraged to contact the Director of Special
Education before arrival to obtain any special information.
You may also contact the Developmental Disability Liaison Officer,
(DSN 564-2102). It is helpful in placement of students to have all
previous testing and evaluations available.

Parochial and Private Schools
If you prefer to send your children to a private school, some
information is available from the School Liaison Officer, who will
send names and addresses on request. This does not constitute an
endorsement or recommendation by the School Liaison Officer, but
these schools have met the needs of JFSC children in the past.
