Gregory P. Macris, U.S. Department of State

Deputy Commandant

Gregory Macris currently serves as the Deputy Commandant at the Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC). Prior to this role, he spent three years as a Faculty Seminar Leader at the National War College (NWC).  Before joining NWC, he served as an assessor with the U.S. Department of State’s Board of Examiners, evaluating candidates for the U.S. Foreign Service.

From 2020 to 2021, he was the Principal Officer and Consul General at U.S. Consulate Peshawar, Pakistan.  His earlier overseas assignments include service as Political Counselor and Acting Deputy Chief of Mission (A/DCM) at the U.S. Mission to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Vienna, as well as Political/Economic Counselor and A/DCM at U.S. Embassy Lisbon.  He also held posts as a consular officer in the Dominican Republic, a political officer in Spain, Ecuador, and Cyprus, and head of a Provincial Reconstruction Team in Parwan, Afghanistan.

Domestically, he served as Deputy Director, Office of Western European Affairs, served two tours in the State Department’s Operations Center, and as a Staff Assistant in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs.  He represented the State Department in the 20-02 CAPSTONE Course at National Defense University, designed for rising general and flag officers.

A 2012 Distinguished Graduate of the National War College, Greg was also awarded the 2012 Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Strategic Writing Award during his time as a student. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from James Madison University and is the recipient of eight State Department Superior Honor Awards, along with the 2007 Sinclaire Award for hard language study.

Greg has spoken Portuguese, Spanish, and Greek during his career, and has a working knowledge of German.  A native of Washington, DC, he is married and is the father of three adult children.  His interests include automobiles, travel, golf, and caring for a spirited German Shorthaired Pointer mix, who ensures he stays active.
