Course Mission
The JIOOC is a distant learning course for military members and DOD civilians, who would like a basic understanding of the Joint Information Operations Environment.
Course Objectives
This course consists of several modules and assignments designed to orient you to IO planning and the Information Related Capabilities (IRCs). The lessons will provide a brief introduction to the following topics:
Introduction to information operations
Introduction to strategic communication
Information operations theory and the information environment
Legality as it relates to information operations
Information related capabilities
Introduction to planning
Introduction to joint targeting
The overall goal is to assist you in preparation for future combatant command level IO planning. We focus on the operational level of war.
The method we use is the Socratic method of learning. This method depends upon reflection and effective questioning to be successful so we encourage you to challenge the material, discussion questions, instructors, your fellow students and your own assumptions.
Course Description
This asynchronous Distance Learning course is presented in a weekly self-paced manner.
JIOOC is conducted on the Blackboard Learning Management System (LMS) and can be accessed 24/7 from any computer or mobile device once your account is established.
Course Length
The course is four (4) weeks. The lessons will require approximately 34 hours to complete, excluding writing assignments. Time to complete writing assignments vary for each student.
Graduation Criteria
Each student is expected to contribute to the course learning environment each week. Students are evaluated on their overall effectiveness while contributing to online discussions according to a rubric.
In addition to online discussions, students complete a written case study assignment and take several exams. Students must obtain a minimum 80% overall grade to receive credit.
Security Clearance Requirements
There is no clearance requirement for students. However, all students must complete the Cyber Cybersecurity Compliance requirements to officially become an NDU/JFSC student.
Quota Information
Individuals currently serving on a Unified Command staff or Joint IO cell have priority for quotas.
Rank Requirement
Per CJCSI 3210.01C (14 February 2014), the Joint Information Operations Force (JIOF) consists of IO units and staff elements within the Joint Staff, CCMD, and JTF/JFC headquarters population of commissioned officers in grades O-4 through O-9 and noncommissioned officers (NCOs) in grades E-6 through E-9 drawn from the Active and Reserve Components, as well as DoD civilians, who conduct IO.
