Prerequisites

PLEASE NOTE that prerequisites for attending JCWS apply to the resident, hybrid, and satellite programs. 

  • Commissioned officer, Grade O-4 and above or Senior enlisted (grades E7-9)1 or U.S. Government civilian2 personnel of equivalent rating
  • Have credit for Phase I from an Intermediate Service School or an approved equivalent3
  • Selected by individual Service, country, or non-DOD agency
  • Current Secret clearance
  • Completed Bachelor’s Degree

Notes

1: U.S. Senior Enlisted.  A change to the NDU Size and Composition of JPME courses approved by the Director, J7, authorizes select senior enlisted members to participate in JCWS. Senior enlisted prerequisites for JCWS are as follows:

  • Senior enlisted (grades E7-E9) - "Functional area specialists" consistent with joint planning groups (occupational specialties: operations; intelligence; communications; logistics; etc.  JPG: see JP 5-0 and/or JP 1-02);
  • In the first year of (365 days), or en route to, a joint assignment or equivalent;
  • Bachelor’s degree (accredited);
  • Service professional military education (PME) complete for pay grade;
  • SEJPME I completion (distance education course offered by JKO);
  • Attend Joint Transition Course (JTC) one week prior to JCWS at JFSC in Norfolk, VA; **JTC may be waived with completion of both SEJPME I and SEJPME II.
  • Current secret clearance;
  • Submit a nomination package that includes the following:
    1. Nomination letter from the first Flag/General/SES officer in their chain-of-command;
    2. A one-page student biography or resume to include education and career history;
    3. An undergraduate transcript; and
    4. A copy of the JPME I certificate from an Intermediate Service School.

Nomination package must be submitted 90 days prior to class date to JFSC Dean Faculty and Programs (DFAP).  Final admissions authority rests with the JFSC Commandant. Please FAX or MAIL nomination packages to:

Note 2: Civilians Students. Civilians must be nominated by first Flag/General/SES Officer in their chain-of-command; include this nomination memo in package along with a one-page student biography or resume to include education and career history and their undergraduate transcript. If the nominee has not completed JPME Phase 1, they must attend the prerequisite five-day Joint Transition Course (JTC) the week prior to JCWS start date at JFSC in Norfolk, VA. Submit applications NLT 90 days prior to the class start date. Final admissions authority rests with the JFSC Commandant.

Note 3: JPME I. On rare occasions, the JPME 1 completion requirement can be waived via Direct Entry Waiver per CJCSI 1800.01F, Officer Professional Military Education Policy (OPMEP).  The waiver must be submitted with a nomination package to the Service JPME II POC and waivers must be approved before enrollment.
