Passing Security Clearances for Incoming Students at National Defense University- Joint Forces Staff College, Norfolk VA
All students are required to complete security clearance verification and submit their clearance information to NDU-JFSC prior to course attendance. As courses vary in schedule and clearance requirements, each student must ensure their Command Security Officer submits an accurate visit request for the specific course. Incomplete or incorrect information may delay processing. The guidance below will help ensure visit requests are submitted correctly.

- Joint & Combined Warfighting School (JCWS)- Resident
- JCWS-H: Hybrid with two face-to-face sessions
- Joint Information Planners’ Course II (JIPC Phase II)
- Joint Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (JC4I)

- Submit the VAR via DISS to SMO DJJNDU7 or use official letterhead for non-DISS agencies (i.e. USCG, DOS, etc.)

- Refrain from using number-letter combinations in the VAR that make it difficult to locate. (i.e. ICFI016534)
- Ensure the VAR dates cover the entire duration of the course.
- Students must have an ACTIVE Access Status and an Access Level that aligns with what is listed on the VAR and required for the course.
- When using letterhead for submission, ensure VAR is sent via encrypted e-mail or through a secure application such as DoDSAFE (https://safe.apps.mil/).
- Confirm receipt. Due to limited manpower and large volume of students, we do not provide individual receipt confirmations unless specifically requested. VAR receipt may be confirmed via phone or e-mail (preferred).
***Exemptions***
- Active-Duty Military Students on PCS orders are not required to submit a visit request.
- No clearance requirements for the following courses: Joint Transition Course (JTC), International Fellows (IF), and Joint Information Planners Course Phase I.
