By Assistant Professor Jonathan Ratchick, Lt Col, USAF Joint Forces Staff College, National Defense University

On 8 November 2022, the Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC), National Defense University (NDU), was honored to host General Daniel R. Hokanson, Chief of the National Guard Bureau.

As the 29th Chief of the National Guard Bureau, General Hokanson is responsible for ensuring 453,000 Army and Air National Guard personnel are ready to protect the homeland and capable of providing combat ready resources to the Army and Air Force. As a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Hokanson advises the President, Secretary of Defense, and National Security Council on all matters pertaining to the National Guard.

JFSC Commandant Brigadier General Voris McBurnette, USAR, Ed.D. presented General Hokanson a plaque recognizing his induction into the NDU Hall of Fame. General Hokanson was officially inducted for the Hall of Fame June 1st, 2021, but was unable to attend his induction in person due to mission demands.  Inductees to the Hall of Fame are selected based on their significant contributions to the community of joint, interagency, and multinational security.

After his induction, General Hokanson spoke to the College about the National Guard and its critical role in maintaining U.S. national security. He then led a small-group discussion with National Guard students and faculty members.

General Hokanson is a 2012 graduate of the Joint Forces Staff College’s Advanced Joint Professional Military Education program, now called Joint and Combined Warfighting School – Hybrid.
