Dr. Bryon Greenwald

Dr. Bryon Greenwald has 34 years formal and practical leadership and education experience across a variety institutions.  He joined the Joint Forces Staff College in 2008 after a 27 year Army career during which he held a variety of command and staff assignments, including Patriot Air Defense battalion command; Garrison Command of Fort Bliss, Texas; and Chief of Staff, J8, USJFCOM.  Dr. Greenwald graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and School of Advanced Military Studies, and the National War College.  He holds M.A. (1991) and Ph.D. (2003) degrees in history from The Ohio State University.  His interests are in military theory, 20th Century military history, and civil-military relations.  He has published extensively in professional journals and is the author of SCUD ALERT!: The History, Development, and Military Significance of Ballistic Missiles on Tactical Operations (AUSA, 1995) and The Anatomy of Change:  Why Armies Succeed or Fail at Transformation (AUSA, 2000).  He is currently writing the history of U.S. Army antiaircraft artillery development from 1917-1945.  In 2003, he received the National War College Excellence in Writing Award for his study, Understanding Change: An Intellectual and Practical Study of Military Innovation.  In 2005, he won the Defense Communities, Military Leadership Award for his transformation of the Fort Bliss military community.  The award specifically mentioned his personal leadership of 2600 military, civilian, and contract employees as they trained, equipped, and deployed over 32,000 personnel; supported the 2005 BRAC decision-making process (resulting in an additional 30,000 soldiers and over $4 billion in DoD investment in Fort Bliss); led the Army Residential Communities Initiative with 3000 new or renovated military homes; and partnered with the City of El Paso to build the world’s largest inland desalination plant.  In 2010, Dr. Greenwald won the JFSC Faculty Recognition of Excellence Award.  In his 7 years at JFSC, Dr. Greenwald has advised 26 JAWS Masters Theses, including 14 award winners, and mentored 15 students to present papers at international conferences.  Besides teaching in the Joint Advanced Warfighting School, Dr. Greenwald simultaneously served as Interim Dean of Faculty and Academic Programs from March 2012 to September 2013.  He also created the 13-day JAWS Synthesis Trip to London, France, Belgium, and Germany and led the trip until 2013.  Currently, Dr. Greenwald teaches the Foundations in the Theory and History of War and the Historical Perspectives on Innovation and Change courses for the Joint Advanced Warfighting School.  He is the Joint Forces Staff College representative to the International Transformation Network and the UK PME system.  He is also the co-chair of the National Defense University Research Council.
