Lt Col Derrick Michaud

Lieutenant Colonel Derrick Michaud is an Air Force Master Navigator and Joint Qualified Officer currently serving as an Instructor for the Joint and Combined Warfighting School (JCWS) in the Joint Forces Staff College, a part of the National Defense University.

His aviation experience spans more than 2,500 flying hours in the RC-135V/W/U/S and TC-135W/S, including 1,000 hours of instructor and evaluator time and over 430 hours of combat experience.  He has deployed multiple times to the CENTCOM, INDOPACOM, EUCOM, AFRICOM, and SOUTHCOM theaters in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM, ODYSSEY DAWN and UNIFIED PROTECTOR, as well as world-wide Sensitive Reconnaissance Operations. Ground assignments include Deputy Commander, 55th Mission Support Group, Offutt AFB, NE, Director, 55th Wing Runway Program Management Office, Offutt AFB, NE, Director of Operations, 338th Combat Training Squadron, Offutt AFB, NE, and Rotational Requirements Branch Chief, J3 Forces Division, US Central Command, MacDill AFB, FL.

Lt Col Michaud’s prior teaching experience includes three years as a middle school history teacher and coach prior to joining the military.  In the military, he has served as an instructor navigator in operational flying squadrons for more than 4 years and in the USAF’s largest Formal Training Unit for eight years.

Lt Col Michaud commissioned via Officer Training School in 2002. He is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State University with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education (Social Studies). He also earned a Master of Art in History from American Military University. Lt Col Michaud’s military education includes Aerospace Basic Course, Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, JCWS (JPME II), and Air War College.

His awards and decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, Air Medal, four Aerial Achievement Medals, Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Joint Service Achievement Medal.
